Walgreens design system
I currently serve as design lead for Walgreens Design System’s retail platform, ensuring consistency through effective design governance & collaboration with our UX team members.
My role involves creating key components & design standards which are then used by our UX team & third-party partners to maintain consistency across various touchpoints within the Walgreens design ecosystem.
The challenge
For years, Walgreens lacked centralized design documentation—many teams were siloed, relying on their own component sheets which often created inconsistencies and redundancy in our workflows. This issue grew exponentially once engineering teams began duplicating & sharing these documents for their own purposes. If a component required an update, it usually meant having to track down every instance to match.
The solution
To alleviate some of the problems we were facing, I was given the task of modernizing our design process by adapting our work for use within Sketch. By shifting off of project work to establish a component library in Sketch, I was able to focus on collaborating with designers and product teams to build more consistent components for use throughout the organization.
Over time, we once again reconfigured our process—this time from Sketch to Figma. By moving to Figma we were able to streamline our workflow even further and establish a more comprehensive governance model for our component library resulting in what would become our first strong design system, CARE DS.
The result
After building a working proof of concept for CARE DS with the approval of our design & engineering teams, leadership took notice and requested to expand the design system into a universal library for use throughout the greater organization. We are currently moving from separate, platform-specific design systems to one unified system covering all areas of retail & pharmacy. A main focus of this work involves building a framework-agnostic component library (AKA AGNO), allowing developers to create reusable, custom HTML elements that work consistently across all modern browsers and JavaScript frameworks.
Design system iconography
As part of my work with the Walgreens Design System, I am responsible for the creation & management of icons utilized across a wide range of both print and digital applications. This extensive collection serves as a vital resource for ensuring consistency and clarity in our visual communication efforts.
